Why artists need to consider quality promotion
Every artist brings something unique to music. Therefore, they deserve their music and message to be heard across the world. It’s tough to even know where to begin when promoting an artist, band or label, but there’re a few things that should be considered when planning to promote an artist, their music, and message.
First and foremost, consult with the artist(s). It’s their career and reputation that is being promoted; therefore, they should have a say where they want their brand to be placed and voiced. Furthermore, the artist has goals and dreams of their own, and a publicist’s job is to help them achieve those goals by utilizing their connections and getting them the publicity they deserve to launch their career.
Publicists are all different, and they all have connections the others don’t. Figure out which publicists handle similar genres of music as the artist(s) and reach out. Inquire about their previous clients, work, blog and playlist placements, and even testimonials from their previous clients. It’s important to locate publicists that work with artists in a similar genre, as they’re going to have contacts at various music publications, YouTube channels, SoundCloud accounts, and Spotify playlists that support the same genre. For example, a hip-hop artist has a very slim chance in being placed in a country music playlist on Spotify.
A lot of public relation companies work with quantity over quality. Like Jamvana, we encourage artists to work with publicists that work with quality music and don’t just take on projects for a paycheck. We are not a volume distributor, and neither should the publicist. Too much work often yields negative results, and the publicist doesn’t fare well with the music publications, YouTube channels, SoundCloud accounts, and Spotify playlists–they often get spammy when they take on too much work. If the publicist is taking on too much work, chances are you music is going to get buried in madness and you won’t see results. Quality over quantity is very important in the realm of publicists.
Every artist deserves quality promotion, especially when they’re just beginning their musical careers. They all have a unique style to their music and deserve to have their message heard by the world. It’s imperative that the proper amount of research is conducted and understood that the publicist is working with quality music, not quantity of music.
